VSO celebrates 50 years of innovations!
Since the beginning of March, VSO has invited volunteers and supporters from the past five decades to special celebratory Your VSO events across the country. Each had its own particular feel and was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended.
Your VSO Edinburgh, Saturday 1st March
VSO's 50th celebrations kicked off at The Hub in Edinburgh at an event with a distinctly Scottish flavour. Highlights included a debate, Exploring new ways to change the world, chaired by Sir George Foulkes with Dr Dorothy Logie, Charles McGee of The Herald, Stewart Campbell, HSE, Director Scotland & VSO Bangladesh Country Director Shahana Hayat taking part in this lively discussion. The majority of attendees had volunteered during the 60s - so there was plenty of catching up to be done and the reunion session were raucous affairs! The day ended with a fantastic cake and the newest and 'oldest' volunteers had the privilege of blowing out 50 candles!
Your VSO Bristol, Saturday 8th March
On a wet Saturday afternoon, attendees found sanctuary from the elements in the bustling atmosphere of Bristol's Watershed. Throughout the afternoon, young and old were united in a series of workshops on issues including Fairtrade and the impact of HIV & Aids on women in the developing world. Jonathan Dimbleby hosted a series of films and inspiring talks and volunteers and supporters got the chance to meet beneficiaries and VSO partners from around the world.
Your VSO London, Saturday 15th March - VSO takes over the Royal Festival Hall!
The sprawling Southbank Centre provided a fantastic location for this jam-packed day. It began with a Question Time style discussion worthy of a prime time BBC slot. Activist Peter Tatchell, business champion Sir George Cox, Fairtrade Foundation Director Harriet Lamb, BBC journalist & author George Alagiah and Richard Dowden, Head of the Royal Africa Society debated on topics from Tibet to military intervention in Darfur. Our superb Chair Emily Maitlis had a real job keeping them in check!
Throughout the afternoon, attendees got the chance to attend a wide range of workshops or listen to world music DJs Rita Ray and Max Reinhardt and other performances. VSO proved itself a continually ambitious and leading organisation by launching the pilot of the new online communities to guests. Jonathan Dimbleby hosted an inspiring evening of films and speeches - the highlight being an address by Douglas Alexander, Secretary of State for International Development. The evening ended with drinks, music and even dancing!
