VSO Somerset member Jill Canney is involved with Music For Africa:
Music for Africa is a registered charity to provide the opportunity for children in the Northern Province of South Africa to learn an instrument. While I was a VSO volunteer in the Northern Province a friend of mine - Tom Toomey a guitar teacher based in Yeovil - came to visit and decided to set up a project in the village to teach music to the children in a local school. The project has grown and expanded into other schools and we have taken out guitars, recorders, glockenspiels, two keyboards, bass drum kit and all sorts. There are two local teachers who have continued the education and we are going back this April to work with other teachers to access three more schools. The project is associated with a Jo'berg based NCO, South African Music Education Trust, who have other music projects in Townships. This is their first involvement with a rural project. Fund-raising is on-going…including a hugely popular and now annual day's music festival at the Haselbury Mill near Crewkerne.
