Really get away from it this October half-term!

(1 July 2003)

If you are one of the hundreds of teachers that would love to take part in a charity fundraising trek - if it weren't for the fact that they always clash with term time - then VSO's October half term Sierra Nevada trek could be just for you!

Following the success of last year's event, which raised over £10,000, international development charity VSO is once again offering a four-day October half term trek. Designed specifically for teachers and those unable to commit to the longer challenge events because they fall in school term time, the Sierra Nevada trek will take place from 18-21 October 2003.

Participants will begin the trek at Pampaneira in the heart of the Alpujarras and over the following three days will pass through the typical regional villages of Bubion and Pitres, Spain's highest village - Trevelez - plus the ever-changing scenery of the Sierra Nevada. All the while the snow-capped mountains will be visible to the north and the Mediterranean to the South.

On reaching the summit of Mulhacen, Spain's highest mountain, trekkers will be treated to views over the Spanish plains, the rest of the Sierra Nevada range and the city of Granada. After the descent the final night of the trip will be spent celebrating with sangria, vino blanco and a Spanish feast in Granada!

Before returning to the UK there will be the opportunity to visit some of the cultural highlights of Granada, including the Moorish palace of the Alhambra, Generalife Gardens and the Albaicin - the gypsy quarter of the city.

One teacher who completed the trek in October 2002 is Angie Rutter of Aylesbury. Commenting on the experience she said:
The timings of the trek were perfect for me, I had always wanted to do something like this but being a teacher I found that most charity challenge events clashed with my term times. When I saw the VSO trek advertised I leapt at the chance! I have to say it was physically the hardest thing I have ever done but also the most rewarding. The support VSO offered both during my fundraising and during the walk was great and I would thoroughly recommend the experience to any teacher.
