Women Matter - Campaign Success

On 2 June, the Department for International Development (DFID) published its new HIV and AIDS strategy.

And the fantastic news is that the 2500 emails, letters and postcards you sent were listened to.

Thanks to your campaigning, DFID made a number of genuinely significant commitments that will help protect millions of women from HIV and AIDS. Those commitments include:

  • Ensuring that the impact of HIV and AIDS on women is understood, measured and integrated within national AIDS programmes
  • Ensuring the impact of AIDS programmes on women is properly measured
  • Increasing by at least 50% DFID’s funding for vaccines and female-controlled HIV prevention such as microbicides
  • Making HIV and AIDS services more accessible for women by integrating them with maternal and child health services, as well as increasing access to family planning and female condoms.

Without your support, hundreds of MPs would not have written to DFID about the strategy, and over 220 MPs would not have signed a motion in parliament to support the campaign’s call to put women at the heart of the strategy.

Thanks to you, we’ve taken an important step in our ongoing work for a fairer world.

VSO will continue to campaign against the discrimination and inequality facing women later this year, and we hope you’ll join us again because together we really can change lives.
